Updating custom themes

How do you update a custom theme?  Not literally, but what is your preference, to install it as a new theme and delete the old theme?  Upload a new version?  If you use upload a new version, do you get errors?

Here is the reason I ask.  I love his themes and use them on both of my sites.  I plan to buy more, but not if this is an issue.

On the one occasion I have tried this it all appears to have worked ok by uploading a new version

It then shows a 'difference' page showing the difference between the 2 versions and you elect to keep the old version or use new version ... obviously if uploading new version going to select the new version option.

As mentioned all appears to be ok

No idea if was due to only having css changes and no template changes or if I was just lucky

I found it was quicker to upload the new version rather than click my way through all those templates so have only done it once.
