Why does embedding YouTube Videos Suck (and what can I do to make it better)???

Why does it take several attempts at embedding YouTube videos?

http://thesandtrap.com/forums/topic/85243-embedding-youtube-videos-on-this-site/

My members were getting so frustrated I had to make the video showing how I will embed videos, which basically involves pasting the URL 5-10 times with returns after each, and then deleting the many which didn't embed and occasionally one or two extra that did, leaving just one.

Is this like this for everyone? Why is it so difficult? Why does "ipsnoembed=true" seem to be tacked on so readily to paragraphs, links, etc.?

More importantly…

What can be done to make this more reliable?

Same, although my members are having a bigger issue with it than I am.  Most of the time when I paste a YouTube URL, hit enter, it works.  However, I have members and moderators who say it doesn't work for them half the time.  Inconsistent, I haven't been able to pin it down to anything specific (browser type, mobile/desktop, etc).

All you should have to do is paste the URL in on its own line and press enter. If that's not working please submit a ticket so we can have a look.

It's never worked reliably at all. It frustrates users, it frustrates moderators… it frustrates everyone. It works the first time you paste a link half the time or so, and that number drops if the text copied is already formatted as a "link".

It works pretty smoothly here, but not at all smoothly on my site. Or the sites of others, judging by the comments here already.

Related or unrelated, why won't a link post a plain text? https://youtu.be/CD-E-LDc384 That was "pasted as plain text." I know in 3.4 there were issues with that, and it would only show as a link and not embed. And I think I remember in earlier versions here, it pasting automatically as text for embedding, but I could be wrong. But now it won't even paste as text so it could be related.

I just pasted the same link (which is actually "8 Inch Hole Capture Speed" - and yes, that's how it copied to my clipboard) here 20 times. It embedded every time.

I pasted it in a new thread on my site and pressed return, waited a second, and did it again. 20 times.

Eight embedded. The other 12 just sat there as linked text. I'm on a fast connection and my browser is the latest Safari.

I found one of the issues maybe. If you copy the URL not from the address bar of the video or share window (for example I copied this from my post above) it adds a space after the URL. Even if you correct it, it is not embedding. So why is it adding a space? A paste it supposed to be exact. So if users are getting URLs from posts, emails, or FB, etc. it is adding the space. Seems to be an issue.

All those have a space after from the paste, the last one, I corrected, still no go.

Seems to be at least one of the issues.

The question might not be 'why is it adding a space?' but 'why am I copying the space?'

I can reproduce what you are doing quite easily....but if I'm more careful with the cursor then I don't copy the paste, and the embed works fine

https://youtu.be/CD-E-LDc384 (space included)

No space included (either by not copying it, or by removing it before I press return)

Log it as a bug - simple reproduction steps: paste url, add a space, press return = no embed.

I'm not copying the space in fact there is no space to copy in post 5 here at the top. Just check. Copy exact link. Paste. Has a space added.

Does not happen here, and this feels slightly OT.

On my site, and it sounds like many others, videos don't embed even when the URL is all alone on its own line.

Yes of course, I have many in there ;), just trying to figure it out, it's also sporadic for me. Sometimes they parse sometimes not. Like in my first post here. That was just a direct paste from YT. I wish I knew why they were so unpredictable.

iacas if you submit a report they can look at the code on your site and maybe figure it out.

It doesn't work on my site either. I have to do what @iacas has suggested as well to make it work. (copy past the link numerous times and wait and see which one works then delete the other links)

I reported this several times but was image related, always told the issue was because it took too long or no response from the url for the image - I reckon both are related to the parsing aspect with the suite not the urls.

And I hit the jackpot on my first attempt on your site. Seriously....raise a ticket - something has to be going on with your environment (not just server, but your client machine too)

I think the issue is deeper than his server or client side. Parsing of images and youtube, soundcloud etc (in fact parsing in general) can be very sporadic. You can past one link and it won't parse, past the exact same link below that and it will parse.

It's IPS related imo.

Of course it's IPS related - it's their software :D

But how do you explain it working for me on his site, without any issue, and it doesn't work for him. What is the difference? My point here is - those who are having issues....raise a support ticket so that the issue can be looked in to....we all now how it should work. When it doesn't work, the reason needs to be looked in....and it can then be worked on and hopefully resolved.
