For those that find the trailing slash appended to friendly urls annoying...

This plugin removes them.

When using this in the latest version of IPB it removed the WYSIWYG editor in my forums and when active I can no longer make new posts. Just letting you know.

Use the path aliases app instead. There is a setting in that app to remove trailing slashes, and it has been updated to work with newer versions of IPS4.

As far as I know it hasn't. It's common practice to remove that slash actually. Google does that as well, personally I'd remove it and personally I also think this should be the default in IPS.

I've also seen most sites don't have that trailing slash. Even IPB3 itself. If you visit the non-slash URL, it will 301 redirect you to the trailing slash URL.

Well that is actually correct. It's important to be consistent at this point. I haven't removed the trailing slash because I am worried that the sitemap will report links with a trailing slash and Dr Google may be angry because we have reported a link which contains a redirect.

So it's best to just roll with IPS has done?

Considering most of us have updated from IPB3, Google must have been redirected plenty of times.

Personally I am leaving as it is and I don't think it's an issue. Wordpress also appends a slash and I know tons of wordpress pages which rank really well. I am also sure they would have changed it if this is an issue.

It's probably the same like the www vs. non-www decision.

If you install Path Aliases by Kevin, it also has the same option as this plugin and says in the switch description "When enabled, trailing slashes used on core IPS4 furls will be automatically removed for cosmetic effect."

Note the cosmetic effect part.

Google doesnt care one way or the other. Its like debating if a job interview is going to be more favorable if you tie your shoe laces with a single or double knot.
