File Name: Featured Content on Board Index

File Submitter: Mikey

File Submitted: 12 May 2012

File Category: User and Social Engagement

This hook adds a "Featured Content" block on the Board Index, above the content, spanning the full width of your board. This hook features:

- Set static blocks, with an image and title, excellent for promoting topics, or other websites.
- Use IP.Content External Widget System to display dynamic blocks
- Limit which groups may view the Featured Content Block

I personally use this to display dynamic news on my board index on my Gaming News website, you can see the demo here: http://gaming-madness.com/index - As I update new articles, the blocks on my forum index automatically update.

Please use the support topic generated here at IPS for queries.

Please note that this download includes old versions. The latest version always is called "featured_content_board_index.xml"

will this work with 3.2.3?

It should do, however I'm only running 3.3.x installations. If you could please test and let me know if it doesn't work on 3.2.3, I'd be appreciative.

slight issue it does not line up correctly... on 24" monitor with 1920 x 1680 res... http://blood-zone.com/index Also on a 19" monitor it crushes it all. instead of staying with the page... but I do like the concept and idea..

Very impressive hook. However, not many of us use IP.Content. I'd rather use it if it was completely on its own and not need any settings from IP.Content. Great work though.

are you a double agent or do you just have multiple identities, like Jason Bourne? Isn't this famous Mikey B, staff member of IPS?

Mr. Mikey, Excellent work.

Issue I am having is that providing an a href, outside of the ip.board environment, my board url is being tacked on. which creates a URL that looks like:

http://myboardurl/urliwanttogoto.

Any ideas?

I'm loathe to add yet more settings, but I'll see if I can add some settings regarding the size of the images so that you can set them. On my resolution for example they line up correctly, but then again I had to set my boards skin width's to 90% to get it to look correct for everyone.
BTW, I can't see the hook on your board..

You can use this WITHOUT IP.Content - that's what the setting is there for. Only enable that setting if you have IP.Content installed.
Right now, simply enter the HTML code and the blocks will display. IP.Content option is just there for people who want dynamic blocks..

Yes I am, but I'll keep these accounts separate in order to keep confusion to a minimum. I don't want people thinking my somewhat shoddily coded hook (so far) is an official IPS product, as it isn't.

Are you entering "www.google.com" like so?

<a href="www.google.com">IMG</a>

If so, this is incorrect. You'll need to add a http:// to your href link, like so:

<a href="http://www.google.com">IMG</a>

I'd love to see how some people use this, please don't be shy to show me. (img or link)

No, I was passing it a link like: url.com

Fully forming the link, and it works great. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Oh ok, my bad, I misunderstood then. Thanks for the reply Mr. Mikey and again, great hook.

1.0.1 has been released.

New in this version is:

  • Templates added
  • Languages added (and hard coded strings have been phrased)

Next version I'll be implementing some of the suggestions sent to me.

Love this ,Great job and thanks for sharing this with us.
Whas wondering ,is it possible to added show forum also beside show topic ? would be great.
Now the images align to the left ,can this be changed to center in the xml file ?

Greetings ,

Michel.

Looks great. I'd love to see a dumbed-down version that has four text-entry fields for each feature, with just a URL, image URL, title, and subtitle field. Right now I can't have my non-html-savvy mods update it, I have to do it myself.

You control what's shown in the blocks in the HTML, so you could add which forum it's posted in or the author or whatever you want, really.

If I were ever to do it this way, it'd be a completely separate hook with separate settings. "Simple Featured Content" maybe, included with this download of course.

Mr. Mikey, I am featuring another website of mine, a random users blog (Generating a thumbnail automatically and a link) and a randomly chosen pet of the week to adopt from my local SPCA. Have one box open that I have not yet decided what to stick in there.

Thanks for this, it really does provide a real service to my community members.

I got mine up and running.... By the way I'm on ip.board 3.2.3 and ip.content 2.2.2. GREAT MOD! Thanks for making this.

I wanted to be able to have the top 4 news stories from a single article category. To accomplish this, I made 4 news blocks with 1 record limit and increasing article offset. then put the JS embed code from that into each block position.

Awesome :) Glad to hear it's being used well, I like the idea of showing different types of content.

Exactly how I'm using IP.Content to show dynamic blocks, I never have to update the ones on my gaming site (link in first post) as IP.Content does it for me, great application.

Thanks for showing me! (I'm seeing 4 blocks :) )

I have had to turn mine off for now.

on mobile browsers, ipads (or anything with lower resolution) it looks like this:
post-357674-0-32207600-1337266112_thumb.

on internet explorer it looks like this:
post-357674-0-19107800-1337266119_thumb.

it probably has something to do with the way I have built my ip.content blocks, so i'll keep tinkering with it.
