File Name: (RSyvarth) Social Groups

File Category: User and Social Engagement

Supported Versions: IP.Board 3.3.x, IP.Board 3.4.x

The Social Groups application allows for the creation of special interest oriented groups on your website. The basic idea behind the app is very similar to the groups system on Facebook, but it expands upon the idea to provide more features than a simple Facebook group page. This app is perfect for any community where there are multiple sub-interest groups within the site. This app will facilitate the creation of a tighter knit community through the creation of more intimate and specialized interactions. It allows for sites with tens of thousands of members to provide a specialized niche for each member without crowding the site. So whether you are a gaming clan trying to organize separate factions or a large community centered around a hobby (cars) or an educational focus (university), you can serve the needs of your members' unique interests with this app.

Noteworthy Features

  • *New* Unlimited Extensibility - With the complete rewrite of the application software, groups can now leverage and import 3rd party addon functions, providing an unlimited choice of unique group functions.
  • *New* Addon Page Feature - This new functionality allows groups to use their main landing page as a dashboard or portal and offer additional pages for FAQ’s, About Us, Game Score Summaries, Blogging, and Galleries, as just a few ideas. The possibilities are endless through the Addon system.
  • *New* Page Layout Tools - Every page in a group has extensive layout possibilities, with the ability to add an unlimited number of rows using 6 different layout configurations.
  • *New* Group Categorization Tools - IP Board admins can now add layers of group categorization controls: themes assigned to groups created in a given category, forum locations in the IPBoard based on groups created in a given category, and default group layouts for groups created in a given category.
  • Member Created - Group creation and administration is done by normal members, so there is no need for you to constantly intervene to keep the groups running smoothly.
  • Group Visibility - There are two different privacy levels (Public and Hidden) which let the groups be used for a range of activities. From a public group for your own personal fan club to a maximum-security hidden group for your evil plot to take over the world, the choice is yours!
  • Group Customization - Allows groups extensive unique customization by providing the ability to feature customized layouts with self-selected functions, individual logos, themes, and banners.
  • Invitations - Want to show off your fancy new group to all of your friends? You can send them all an invite to make sure that they don't miss out!
  • *New* Social Sharing - Share your groups using a variety of social media share buttons.
  • Mass Messaging - Need to get a message out to all of the members of your group quickly? Well, you now can send them all a Mass Private Message to ensure that they are aware of all of the happenings within your group.
  • Unique Forum with Sub-forum Functionality - Each time a group is added, a matching forum is also created. Group Admins have the ability to control permissions for this forum based on whether or not people are a member of the group. They can also create separate, private access sub-forums for group ranks such as staff members. You can control how group forums appear in the forum index. Each group forum features the group's sidebar navigation and personalized header.
  • Group News - Groups are able to add news topics to their group portal to make sure the latest happenings are always visible to their members.
  • Member Control - Group admins are able to control and create an unlimited number of group member ranks to provide tailored functionality for different features of the group. A robust banning feature helps to ban those pesky troublemakers from a group to keep things civilized.
  • And Much, MUCH, MORE! - You can read more about this app in the documentation.

Am liking this :)

Just one issue - members should not be able to prevent certain groups (admin, staff etc.) from seeing the group and having full control over it. Currently it is possible for a member to prevent an admin from seeing the group etc.

Also a consideration for the future - currently all social group forums are in one location - I could see a request for the forums to be a sub forum of another public forum on the site, rather than separated from an open public forum.

One suggestion - allow a group(s) to view groups if it is offline.

Whoops, forgot about that. I'll make sure to include that in the next version.

Are you talking about the permission grid within the group? I could make it so you can't remove certain permissions from certain groups, but I don't really want to remove functionality that someone may want without any good reason.

You can move the forums after they are created and they will still function in the same manner. So if you want to re-organize them, you can.

Yes - currently a member could set up a group and then hide it from admins and invite members into it without an admin or staff member being aware that the group existed.

Anything could happen within the group, including illegal activity and the site owner would be responsible by law - hence the reason why nobody should be able to hide anything from the admin group, staff group etc.

edit: actually having played around with it, even with permissions granted to admins, the forum is still hidden - personally I think there should be an over-ride in the configuration so that one can set it up to always show the forum & or group to a selected group(s) for the reasons above without the admin and senior staff having to join any group.

(unless I have my configuration wrong & it should already be visible)

One other issue - I use a custom skin and the RSS dropdown appears blank & also name of user on staff page - okay not blank but it is white on white so appears blank.

I believe you are misunderstanding the permission grid within the group. When it has permissions for "Admin", "Moderator", etc. that is completely unrelated to people's user group. These are related to a member's rank within the group. If you go to the group's Manage Group->Manage Members->Edit on one of the members, you can control the user's rank within the group. That rank is what is controlled by the permission grid on the group.

If you set up your admin group as a Global Moderator then you should be able to have full permissions in every group, you won't necessarily be able to see all of the forums on the listing, buy you can access them through the group's page.

If you would like to see all of the group's forums you can edit the setting at ACP->Social Groups->Settings->Individual Group->Group Forum Display. I will consider making it so you can show all of the group's forums no matter what the setting is when you are a Global Mod.

If you could give me a link to your site i'll take a look at the skinning issue.

okay, I see (me being thick) - I will rename those to Group Admin, Group Moderator etc., otherwise I can see members being confused.

Will PM you a link

This has potential.. theres a few things posted above I agree with and would like to see changed but Im going to buy it anyway to encourage more development. Nice job.

Suggestion: Make it possible to convert vBulletin Social Groups to your social groups so that when people convert from vB to IPB people (like me) can also convert their social groups data (which currently you can do nothing with).

I do not own vB so I am unable to attain a database from their social groups app. If I could get a database I could probably write a conversion script.

I was mistaken - you must set up a moderator group and assign say administrators to it - then the admin group on the forum will be able to moderate the group.

I am not sure, I do not think so, I guess I could write some JS to change the highlight...

Will this beta be upgradable to the final release?

Yes.

Glad you like it. I have already marked quite a few bugs in this release. I will be releasing a Beta 2 within the next few days addressing these issues.

Really liking this application.

Some people seem kind of confused here ...

Back end - global moderator, once assigned - has access to ALL GROUPS EVERYWHERE, including forums once he/she clicks on the groups

Front end - every group has a creator(owner) who is also automatically assigned as an administrator. Then, if you get more members, you can promote them to moderator or administrators. Yes, if you wanted, you could have a group of 16 members, and all of them could be administrators ...

We have 24 groups already, some with 68 members, and some of the groups are private and some are hidden ...

and just for those who are wondering, this app looks SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good with IPB Skin Shop's Cyantic Skin ...

Where do we report bugs? Found a bug, if you move the board to another category via the admin panel, when you try to view a topic in the social group, it says "we cannot determine which forum this topic is in".

Thanks :) - link to yours?

Have now got my head around this. Was a bit confused initially.

The forums can be hidden from non-members / members awaiting approval, however they get a big message - just wondered if something a little more personal could be presented along with a link back to the group home page.

I would prefer if it looked "SOOOO good" on all applications.. that would be the goal at least.

Glad you are figuring it out.

I still need to make some more custom error messages, I will get to that once I have fixed all of the major bugs.
