About This File

This plugin enhances IP.Board's built-in tag and prefix system, providing custom styling and fine-grained control over prefixes, as well as some helpful moderation tools. Prefixes are explicitly created through the Admin CP, and can be chosen when creating a topic.

NOTE: This is the IP.Board 3.x-compatible version of the application. Support and maintenance will be ongoing, but this version will not otherwise be updated. For the 4.x-compatible version, see here: Advanced Tags & Prefixes for IPS 4.x

Plugin Benefits and Features:

  • Define all prefixes manually through the Prefix Manager--even for open-tag systems.
  • Add, fix, and remove tags and prefixes in bulk with new administrative tools.
  • Choose a prefix when posting, separate from the tag input.
  • Have greater control over where and how tags and prefixes are displayed.
  • Add custom HTML formatting to your prefixes everywhere they appear.
  • Use an image as a prefix.
  • Limit who can use a prefix.
  • Limit where a prefix can be used.
  • Require a prefix to be chosen in some forums.
  • Add tags and prefixes to topics in bulk with Multi-Moderation.
  • Apply a prefix to topics imported from RSS.
  • Add a default prefix and tags to all new topics in a forum.
  • Allow users to enter custom tags in some forums and not others.
  • Show prefixes to users of the mobile skin.
  • ... And more!

The latest version requires IP.Board 3.4. Earlier versions are available for IP.Board 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3. Installation consists of uploading a folder and running through the install wizard.

User Feedback

Scratch my last comment. It's not an issue with the modification. It's actually down to an IPB 3.2.3 issue, which Ryan has kindly provided a fix for: http://community.invisionpower.com/files/file/4924-323-hotfix-make-tags-editable/

Hi Ryan

I've been thinking about buying this mod for a while now, but there is something essential that's missing. For all of us who haven't been using tags (IPB tags are just a new feature and all those millions of posts and communities who existed prior to the addition of tags to IPB's latest release) have only the new posts that will feature the use of tags by the members. Of course, you can say that the older topics can edited to add tags, but what if (in all likelihood) there is a million older posts, so then what? Will the moderators and members have to edit each and every old post to include tags? You do understand what i'm hinting at? We need a search/parsing system for your modification that will go through all the posts on the IPB forum and automatically add the tags and prefixes, which are set in the ACP based on specific criteria. For example, you could set certain specific keywords in the post, so that when searching to add tags to the topic, if the first post of the topic contains the word "sale" then the tag and/or prefix "sale" should be edited into the topic automatically. Get my point? It would make full use of IPB's innate new tag feature. Please take this into consideration for your next release, which will be soon, i hope!

Shaks,

I added such a feature in the last update. :) See this screenshot: http://community.invisionpower.com/index.php?app=downloads&module=display&section=screenshot&record=56318&id=3324&full=1 You can't search by first post contents, only topic title, but that might be something I can add in the next update.

Thank you for considering the suggestions, Ryan. I will continue this discussion in the support thread. This is indeed a fantastic mod and i'm very eagerly waiting for the new improved version. Consider me first in line to buy it when it's available!

Ryan,

I wanted to thank you for your work on this mod, this is filling a very large hole in the current implementation of tagging on the IPS platform. That said, I totally agree with Shaks, it needs to be able to search the content of the OP, because general members rarely construct really descriptive titles on their posts as I'm sure most of us are very well aware. ;)

Tags present a fantastic way for sites to be able to pull together disparate content types that share a common topic. It's a great way to categorize a site's content, but the usefulness of tagging is in direct proportion to how MUCH content on a site is tagged. And as pointed out, pre-existing sites (I.E. virtually all users of the IPS Platform) will have the vast majority of their content untagged, and even new sites will find that members often don't bother to add tags.

What would be awesome, would be:

1. The ability to manually run a search for a tag/keyword in ANY of the apps (one at a time if needed), then apply that tag to all the results.
2. The ability to schedule a cron job that runs through and tags any new posts/blog entries/gallery content/IP.C database entries etc created in the previous day.
3. The ability to build a page that displays various content types that match a given tag, a "landing page" that shows you everything you could want to know about that topic. :) Google and the other SE's would absolutely DEVOUR an appropriately titled page like that that was updated once a day, every other day or something similar.

I'm well aware that the above is absolutely non-trivial. :) If you have any interest, we'd be more than happy to help subsidize the development, ESP of #3 above, it would be a huge traffic generator for us.

James,

I actually implemented most of shaks' suggestions in the update a couple weeks ago, including searching the first post for keywords. I'd encourage you to upgrade if you've not already done so.

Regarding your own suggestions, I can tell you off the bat that #1 and 2 are unlikely to happen in the near future, partly because I don't actually own any of the additional applications, and partly because each additional application supported in that manner would dramatically increase development time, bugs, and code size and complexity. I have been attempting to accomodate al applications as much as possible; this is most clear in prefix styles taking effect globally, and the tag manager giving per-app control. Both cases are sufficiently abstract to avoid the icky details of each application, though.

As for #3, I can absolutely see the appeal, and that's something I'll strongly consider for future development. Thanks.

Does it work with IP.Blog and IP.Content?

Some features do, but not all. Styled prefixes work everywhere including Blogs and Content, but they use the normal tag/prefix select box instead of the separate prefix dropdown that's added for IP.Board. The 'Manage Tags' Admin CP module works for every application.

A correction on my previous comment: Styled prefixes should work in any application that includes native support for prefixes. I was mistaken in thinking that included IP.Blogs [supports tags only]. IP.Downloads has this as of version 2.5, and IP.Content will as well in the upcoming 2.3.

question before purchase. I'm trying to see if there's a way to either "suggest" a tag, or require users to pick from a list of pre-defined tags and then add any extra tags of their own. Does this mod have that capability? Or if I use the managed prefixes to pre-define a list and left tags free, do the prefixed items show up in the tag cloud?

Basically, all posts on my board point to a game and an edition, and I want those to be managed. but I'd also like users to be able to tag things with whatever other labels they feel are important.

As answered in the support/discussion topic: You can't have both predefined and open tags in a single forum, but you can let users choose a predefined prefix and enter tags at will. That is probably your best option. Yes, prefixes are included in the tag cloud.

No, that's not currently a feature of the application. You can choose any number of tags per topic, but only one prefix.

Im not sure if I am missing something important that is painfully obvious to anyone else lol but I cant seem to figure out how to remove a prefix altogether. I only have prefixes in certain forums but when I topic is posted incorrectly and I move it, there doesnt seem to be a way to remove the prefix after the topic is created and moved to another forum that has no assigned prefixes.

fly1: You have a couple options. You can move it to a forum with prefixes temporarily to remove it through the 'edit topic title' screen. Or, you can create a topic multimod that removes any prefix, and apply that to the topic.

EROAN: IP.Board 3.3 is indeed supported. There are a couple minor compatibility bugs, but I'll be releasing an update to fix them within several days.

Wow... I have to contact Ryan. I was probably the first person to buy this mod... prerelease!!! It has come a long way and it is surprising that IPB just didn't pay him for the work and made it a standard part of IPB! Great work Ryan (and thanks for the support way back...)

Ryan, you've created yet another fantastic mod. I've been "saving" up for this for a while, no financially, but time wise. I wanted to make sure I had a day to dedicate to the process and in the end I had all the posts on my board tagged and pre-fixed in an hour! It's been a pleasure to use and it's nice to see the tag cloud on my board actually have some tag-words in it! lol

My forums has over 3000 members registered and 80,000+ posts. The Auto Tag & Prefix mod just streaked through them and tagged everything with about 90% accuracy which I was really pleased with, as I had a feeling it might be a lot less accurate than that (hence my leaving a lot of time to correct any inaccuracies over the 80k posts).

So thanks once again for another cracking mod. Easy Pages was great. Mod Notifications was fab. Adv Tags & Prefixes is brilliant.

'nuff said. :D
